I just had an agency request a copy test with the following exercises:
1. Develop 3 campaign taglines with rational for each.
2. Develop a three-phase holiday campaign with a tagline and a month-by-month plan.
3. Write 3 headlines each for 3 products categories.
4. Write seven Instagram posts complete with caption & an image reference.
I feel like this is extensive and am wondering if you agree? Also, do you have any advice on how to handle this? Thanks in advance!
My first piece of sales copy was free, and the results were awesome. Enough to convince me to start charging!
I heard a friend talk about having to cancel an event because no one was interested. Now, I know his business well, and I know he has customers that would definitely be interested in his training.
So I asked if I could send an email to the 500 customers on his list (he has a website and email list, but is a bricks-and-mortar business and doesn’t focus much on using his online presence).
Honestly, it was a free gig, so I didn’t agonise over it. I aimed to do a good job and communicate the value of what he was offering.
Literally within a few days, then entire training day had sold out, and I resent the exact same email again, with a note at the start letting them know that the first day had sold out, and they needed to book now to secure a spot in the additional training day.
Remember… this event was about to be cancelled due to lack of interest. And one simple email resulted in two events being run!
I was really proud of the results, and it validated that I was good enough to make people money.
So don’t be afraid of free work. But make sure you choose wisely. I wanted this gig because I knew he’d let me actually send the email and measure the results. There are plenty of people out there who won’t understand the value of what you’re offering, and they may never make the changes you suggest. And if they do, make sure they (or you) have the capacity to measure the results :-)
